The willow tree is also referred to as a “weeping willow” due to the way raindrops run down its long leaves denoting an appearance that the tree is crying. Therefore it is commonly associated with immortality and rebirth which makes it a common landscape feature in graveyards.

In Celtic folklore, it is believed that the willow tree brought good luck by knocking on its trunk for good fortune. Hence, the famous phrase “knock on wood.” In addition, the sound of the wind blowing through its leaves was said to be elves whispering to one another.
